„Free Fall – Who You Are“ Celebrates Premiere of New Recut
More than a decade after its initial release, the drama Free Fall (Freier Fall) is returning to the screen in a new cinematic version. Originally released in 2013, director Stephan Lacant’s film focused on an LGBTQ+ narrative. Tonight, 13 years later, the project celebrates the world premiere of this new cut, titled Free Fall – Who You Are, at Kino International in Berlin.
The screening takes place at 9:30 PM as part of the „MonGay“ film series, followed by a live panel discussion featuring the director and the original cast. The film will be available starting June 7 on Q Studios Berlin, a streaming platform dedicated to queer cinema. A nationwide theatrical rollout is currently under consideration.
The plot of the 2013 film centers on Marc (Hanno Koffler), a riot police officer whose life follows a traditional path: a career trajectory, a pregnant partner, and a newly built family home. However, during a mandatory training seminar, he meets his colleague Kay (Max Riemelt). While training together, an intimacy develops between the two men, challenging Marc’s perspective on his own identity. Katharina Schüttler plays Bettina, Marc’s pregnant girlfriend, who notices the changes in her relationship.
Under the title Free Fall – Who You Are, Stephan Lacant has re-edited the original footage, integrating previously unreleased scenes to fully realize his artistic vision. The foreign-language versions of this cut were implemented using AI technology, utilizing a voice modulation based on Max Riemelt’s actual voice, rendered in a notably higher register. The announcement has renewed fan interest regarding a potential feature sequel.
