Fall 1943. Young Rosa, fleeing bomb-stricken Berlin, reaches a small isolated village near the eastern border. This is where her in-laws live and where her husband, engaged at the front, has written to her to take refuge while awaiting her return. Rosa soon discovers that the seemingly quiet village hides a secret: within the forest it borders, Hitler has his headquarters, the Wolf’s Lair. The Führer sees enemies everywhere; being poisoned is his obsession. One morning at dawn Rosa is picked up, along with other young women from the village, to taste the food cooked for him. Torn between fear of death and hunger, the tasters will form alliances, friendships, and secret pacts with each other. Rosa, the Berliner, struggles to be accepted. But when she finally overcomes her distrust of her, something happens that will make her feel guilty. An SS officer, against all rationality and in spite of herself, awakens love in her. Or perhaps the simple need to feel alive, despite everything.
